How to read a roping
Plain talk. No flyer jargon left unexplained.
How far is 200 miles?
From Brownwood that covers Stephenville and Hamilton (about 50 miles), Abilene and San Angelo (under 100), Waco and Sweetwater (a little over 100), and Decatur and Bryan out near the edge. If you only want a short haul, tap 60 miles.
What the numbers mean (#10, #8, #12.5)
Every roper has a classification number. Add header plus heeler. That team number has to be at or under the division. A #5 header and a #5 heeler is a #10 team — they can enter a #10 or anything higher, but not a #9. Some divisions also cap the header (a #10 with a 6 header cap means the header cannot be over a 6).
Entry fees are per roper
If it says $150 / roper, you pay $150 and your partner pays $150. That is $300 a team, each time you enter that division. Draw-in fees, memberships, stalls, and RV are extra.
Pick, draw, and pick/draw
Pick means you choose your partner. Draw means they draw you a partner. Pick 1 / draw 1 means you enter once with a partner you picked and once with a drawn partner. Draw pot is all drawn — good if you showed up without a partner.
Progressive after 1
You rope a steer. If you catch, you get another one. Miss and you are done. Four-steer progressive after 1 means you need four clean steers to win, but one miss sends you to the trailer.
Books open / rope at
Books open is when they start taking entries. Rope at is when the first steer leaves the chute. Be there when books open if the roping might fill. Weeknight jackpots often rope at 6:00. Weekend qualifiers often rope at 9:00.
WSTR, USTRC, Xtreme, Prime
WSTR is World Series of Team Roping — 21 and over, usually $150 a roper, qualifies you for the Finale. USTRC is the other big association; you need a current card to collect a check. Xtreme runs Wednesday nights and weekend classics in Stephenville. Prime and 40+ are for ropers 40 and older.
Stalls and RV
If you are staying overnight, call the arena about stalls. Figures on this board are typical, not a reservation. Covered arenas matter in September heat and December northers.
Your number on this board
On the home page you can set a header number and a heeler number. We will mark divisions you can enter. We do not enter you — we just help you skip the ones you cannot rope.
This board is a haul planner, not the official books. Confirm fees and times with the producer before you leave the house.
